Free Tools to Help With Online Reputation Management

By Herb Tabin | Submitted on February 2nd, 2011 0 Comments

In our book DIY Online Reputation Management, Craig Agranoff and I (Herbert Tabin) talk about how to facilitate your own, do-it-yourself online reputation management. Of course, because things online change rapidly, we did not go into detail about which online tools might be available for accomplishing this task. Otherwise, the book would have been outdated before hitting the bookstore. We do talk about these things on our blog, however.

This is our current list of favorite, free tools for aiding in online reputation management. You don’t need to use all of them, of course, and some have overlap with others. Your choice of tools will depend on your goals with your reputation and social media outreach. We’ll list these by favorites (best first) according to Craig and I’s assessment or experience.

Blog Monitoring
These tools are used to monitor blogs around the Internet for specific topics, names, etc. (usually by search term).

BlogPulse – This is one of the newer players in this field and it has some strong tools, putting it up front for the serious reputation management concern. Trend Search and Conversion Tracker are great complementary tools to this core blog search engine.

Google Blog Search – The mother of all blog search engines, those who use Google tools for other things will like this addition. It’s real time so posts made within the hour are often included here as the Googlebot crawls. Subscribe to email alerts to hands-free management.

BackType BCM – The Blog Comments Monitoring (BCM) tool indexes blogs and social networks. It would be a favorite if it weren’t still in beta. If you have access to the beta trial, then you have access to one of the strongest emerging tools for rep management out there.

Technorati – The oldest and leading blog search tool, Technorati indexes in real time while also ranking authority (by viewers) and influence (by mentions) of blogs. A good tool for tracking your own blog, but not as useful as the others on the list for tracking your own mentions on other blogs.

Twitter Monitoring
The fastest-growing social network, Twitter is used by millions via the Web as well as mobile. It’s likely one of the most important social networks in your profile. Tracking it is paramount.

SocialOomph – This used to be TweetLater, but they’ve expanded their horizons to include Google’s Buzz and a few other tools. Currently, in our opinion, this is the best of the bunch for Twitter monitoring and it includes the crucial ability to set up email digests of tweets for your keywords and @replies. An excellent tool with an optional paid version for the truly social networking gurus.

TweetBeep – For those only interested in alerts, this simple tool provides hourly email alerts of any keywords, people, etc. you wish.

Others
Google Alerts – For a broad spectrum search of items on the Web, setting up a simple Google Alert that emails you daily results for your term can do the trick. Best if used to track your name (e.g. “Craig Agranoff” as the term), not so good for many niche subjects.

WhoLinksToMe – Simple site monitoring that can watch your chosen URL (usually a site name like http://doityourselfonlinereputationmanagement.com/) and show you who’s backlinking to you. A simple tool, but effective. Requires a subscription to automate it.

BoardTracker – This is a good tool if your focus is on message boards and similar systems. These can be effective marketing venues and with BoardTracker, you can see what’s being said and where, easily.

These are our current favorites, but there are new and changing technologies coming out daily. If you have a favorite tool for monitoring your reputation and networks online, let us know in the comments!
